As I opened my email today the first subject line I saw across the top of my screen was: “Go after what you want before it’s too late.”
While I am a whole-hearted advocate for going after what you want and believe we should absolutely live our life with a sense of purpose and urgency, this headline just didn’t sit right with me. In felt like an urging to talk to you about subjective timelines and the notion of expiration dates on our goals and dreams, so here it goes…
We set goals and never acknowledge or celebrate the small steps we take that move us closer to where we want to be. When you stop and think about it, this actually shouldn’t be a surprise. Even when we accomplish a big goal, it’s not uncommon for there to be an absence of celebration because of the feeling that there’s no time to ‘waste’ before moving on to the next thing.
With goal setting, its not uncommon for all our focus to be on the business aspect of our lives. That is, afterall, the environment where most of us where introduced to the concept.
If we do happen to set goals in other areas we treat each one as if it’s a silo… that it exists independently. But that’s not how life works. What we do in one area, ultimately impacts something else. Everything is connected.
