If Networking Feels Slimy You're Doing It Wrong

I remember a time when my network was almost non-existent. I didn’t put myself in the position to meet new people because frankly, even the word, networking, made my skin crawl. That’s because I didn’t have a good example of what true networking looked like. Fortunately, with deliberate attention, that changed. Today I’m grateful to be able to say I have a vibrant & supportive global network… one that has been a joy to build.

If you’re not quite there yet, I encourage you to start focusing on building your world-class network….not someday, but right now.

Here are a few important things to keep in mind as you do:

A phenomenal network isn’t about numbers. It’s not about followers and subscribers. It’s about relationships.

Networking done right always starts from a place of generosity. In building new relationships begin from a place of service. Think about how you can be of value.

Focus on being interested, rather than interesting.

Listen and tune in to ways that you can be helpful. Can you make an introduction… share a resource… or generally provide support --  without an agenda….without expecting anything in return?

When you start by focusing on what you can give rather than what you can get, you’ll be surprised at all you end up gaining.

Networks require nurturing. There are no short cuts.  They require an investment of time.  Be willing to make it.

As you move through your day I want you to start envisioning the type of people you want to include in your network. Then think about how you can take the first step to be of value and begin the relationship building process.

Who can you reach out to – in person or online?  What event – that you would typically avoid – could you choose to attend?

If it seems a little overwhelming or that ‘slimy’ feeling shows back up it’s because you’re focusing too much on yourself. Shift your attention  back to how you can be of value. You’ll quickly see how that simple change in perspective changes everything.
